An absolute priority when you first move into your new rental property should be to arrange your utility bills. It is essential you take meter readings the day you move in to provide to whichever utility company you decide to sign up with. Arranging the utilities and all relevant bills for a rental property is the responsibility of the tenants.

Students are exempt from Council Tax, but they must obtain a Council Tax exemption form from their university. Any professionals living with students will be liable to pay Council Tax.
As a tenant you may choose whichever utility suppliers you wish, they will need the meter number, a meter reading and the full property address details. You are responsible for paying the bills from the very first day of your Occupational Agreement, even if as a student your tenancy start date is the summer and you don’t move in until the start of term in September, there will still be standing charges due for payment. The previous tenants should have given a final meter reading and closed their account when they moved out.
